Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Samford Defeats VMI 2-0 For Third-Straight Win

LEXINGTON, Va. – After a scoreless first half, the Samford women's soccer team found a pair of goals from senior Alyssa Frazier and sophomore Kylie Gazza to pick up a 2-0 road victory against VMI Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field.

KEY PLAYS
  • In the first five minutes of the match, Samford pressed VMI's backline which resulted in two early opportunities in front of the goal with shots from Nikki Bario and Taylor Yount.
  • Ella Simpson would have Samford's best chance in the first half after she got a head on Alyssa Frazier's corner kick on the backend of the six-yard box. However, VMI's goalkeeper, Sidney Swoope, batted the ball away to keep the game notched at 0-0 at the 20:45 minute mark.
  • After Taylor Yount was taken down right outside the 18-yard box, Alyssa Frazier would take the free kick for Samford which resulted in a goal for the Bulldogs eight minutes into the second half after Frazier had a line drive to the left side of the net.
  • At the 63:13 minute mark, Samford earned its sixth corner kick of the game which allowed Kylie Gazza to get a head on Alyssa Frazier's curling ball to the middle of the six-yard box to double the score.
  • Samford continued to push the pace, recording two additional shots and three corners, but would ultimately close out the game with a 2-0 victory over the Keydets for the Bulldogs third-straight win.

  • The Bulldogs took a 9 to 1 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams combined for 19 fouls on the afternoon.
  • Alyssa Frazier scored her second goal of the season and recorded her third assist to lead the Samford attack.
  • Kylie Gazza once again scored off a header for back-to-back goals in the past two games.

  • The Bulldogs will continue on the road with their next game against UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Apr. 3 at 12 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium to close out the regular season.
