Samford Travels To Western Carolina, Mercer, and Chattanooga This Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's tennis team will close out its regular season on the road with its first match on Wednesday, Apr. 14 at 1 p.m. against Western Carolina. This will be followed by a match against Mercer on Friday, Apr. 16 at 2 p.m. and a match against Chattanooga on Sunday, Apr. 18 at 12 p.m.

The Bulldogs hold an overall record of 11-10, 1-3 (SoCon) after dropping their match to Wofford, 4-3, last week. Western Carolina will enter competition with a current record of 9-3, 1-3 (SoCon), while Mercer sits a 6-8, 0-4 (SoCon) and will compete against UNCG before taking on Samford. Chattanooga will close out its regular season against the Bulldogs and have an overall record of 9-8, 2-4 (SoCon).

BULLDOGS TO WATCH:
  • Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg has locked in back-to-back wins in singles at the No. 1 spot with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over MTSU's Lee Barnard and 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win against Jenna Vroman from Wofford. Van Rensburg has improved her overall record to 13-6 on the season with the victories.
  • Samantha Nanere is also a top contender for Samford in singles with a current record of 10-7 with six wins coming from the No. 5 spot and four from the No. 6 spot. Nanere's most recent win came against Wofford's Emely Kahrs after a straight-set, 6-4, 6-0, win on court five.
  • In doubles, Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg and Alexis Lopez have a team-high 12 wins at the No. 1 spot with the duo have only dropping three matches this season. The pair have been undefeated in their past six matches.
OPPONENT QUICK LOOKS:
  • Western Carolina has captured one win while dropping three matches in conference play. The Catamounts found their one victory against Chattanooga by a final score of 4-3. Antonella Benavides has a team-high 10 wins in singles this season, securing three at the No. 4 spot and seven at the No. 5 spot. In doubles, Kata Foldeak and partner Jacy Smith have an overall record of 4-5 at the No. 1 spot and have found one win and one loss in conference for the Catamounts.
  • Mercer has yet to see a win in conference play this season with all four of its losses coming from ETSU, Chattanooga, Furman, and Wofford. The Bears are led in singles by sophomore Alara Hollyfield with an overall record of 7-5 with six wins and four losses coming from the No. 2 spot. Doubles duo, Mary Courville and Maeva Roquebert, sit at 6-6 on their season with six wins and five losses at the No. 1 spot while the pair have dropped one match on court two.
  • Chattanooga is coming off a 6-1 victory over UNC Greensboro for an overall record of 2-4 in conference play. Emma Van Hee has produced impressive results at the No. 2 spot in singles for the Mocs with 13 wins and just four losses this season. Bogdana Zaporozhets and Jessie Young lead Chattanooga in doubles with an overall record of 9-8 and have secured all their wins at the No. 2 spot.
