CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Samford baseball team plated seven runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the rally fell just short in a 12-11 loss in the Southern Conference series finale Saturday afternoon at Western Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Western Carolina jumped on top early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
- Samford came back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Ryan Crockett hit a two-run home run to left field to bring Samford to within one run.
- The Catamounts, however, broke the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push their lead to 12-2.
- Samford added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 12-4. Garrett Howe scored on a ground out by Tyler McManus, and Sonny DiChiara scored on a ground out by Towns King.
- The Bulldogs came back with seven runs in the top of the ninth inning. King scored the first run on a WCU error, and Will David scored when Howe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
- Taylor Garris then scored when DiChiara was walked with the bases loaded. McManus then singled, driving in two runs to make the score 12-9. The final two runs were scored on a triple by King, cutting the lead to 12-11.
- The Bulldogs, however, were unable to get the tying run across the plate, ending the game in a 12-11 WCU victory.
ON THE MOUND
- Zach Hester (1-3) took the loss on the mound for Samford, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three runs, just two earned, on two hits.
- Tristen Campbell (2-0) earned the win for Western Carolina, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
NOTABLES
- King went 3-for-5 with two triples and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- McManus went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI for Samford.
- Crockett homered, driving in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance.
- For Western Carolina, Justice Bigbie went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Samford will play at Auburn on Tuesday, April 20. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Plainsman Park.
