Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From VMI

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team swept a Southern Conference doubleheader from VMI Friday afternoon and evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Samford won the first game, 11-4, and then the Bulldogs came from behind for a dramatic, 7-6, 10-inning victory in the second contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VMI scored a run in the first inning, two runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead over Samford.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Max Pinto, Sonny DiChiara and Kaden Dreier drove in a run each in the inning as Samford took a 5-4 lead.
  • Samford added to its lead with two runs in the seventh inning. Towns King hit a two-run home run to give the Bulldogs a 7-4 advantage.
  • The Bulldog wrapped up the scoring with four runs in the eighth inning. King, Will David, Taylor Garris and Pinto drove in a run each as Samford took the 11-4 victory.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Gene Hurst (2-0) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing just one hit to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Nathan Light (0-6) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on five hits to take the loss for the Keydets.
 
NOTABLES 
  • King went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI for Samford.
  • David also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while DiChiara went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • VMI was led by Cody Warner, going 4-for-4 at the plate

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VMI scored a run in the fourth inning, two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Samford plated two runs to cut the lead to 6-3. Pinto hit a two-run home run to left field to bring Samford to within three runs.
  • Samford added two more runs in the eighth inning to make the score 6-5. Tyler McManus doubled to drive in Colton Ledbetter and Brooks Carlson to make it a one-run game.
  • In the ninth inning, Carlson doubled down the left-field line to drive in King to knot the score at 6-6 and force extra innings.
  • In the bottom of the 10th inning, David singled to right-center field, and then stole second base to start the rally. Taylor Garris then singled to left field to drive in David to give Samford the 7-6 victory.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Chase Isbell (1-1) pitched 1.0 inning of hitless relief to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Trey Morgan (1-2) tossed the final 1.2 innings for VMI, allowing two runs on four hits to take the loss for the Keydets.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Carlson went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • McManus went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Pinto went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
  • VMI was led in game two by Will Knight, going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
 
NEXT UP 
Samford and VMI will conclude their series with a single game Saturday. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
