BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Mercer Bears in the final game of the teams' three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Mercer took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a home run by Angelo DiSpigna, Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Crockett homered to left-center field to tie the score. Towns King later singled to drive in Tyler McManus to give Samford the lead.
Mercer tied the game when DiSpigna hit his second homer of the game in the top of the fourth.
Samford added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Kaden Dreier singled to drive in McManus for the first run of the inning. Taylor Garris later singled to drive in Crockett for a two-run Samford lead.
Mercer knotted the score at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. DiSpigna drove in the first run of the inning with a single, and Garett Delano later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Mercer's R.J. Yeager doubled to drive in David Burke for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning, giving Mercer a 5-4 lead.

ON THE MOUND

Hamp Skinner (3-1) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up three runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
Luke Sutko (3-3) tossed 4.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits to earn the win for the Bears.

NOTABLES

Dreier went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
Crockett homered, driving in one run in a 1-for-4 performance.
For Mercer, DiSpigna went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.

NEXT UP

Samford will play a three-game Southern Conference series at Wofford, April 30 and May 1. The teams are set to play a single game Friday at 4 p.m. (CT), and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT).
