Baseball Falls Twice At Wofford Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C.
 – The Samford baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Wofford Saturday at Russell C. King Field. Wofford took the first game, 7-5, and in the second game the Terriers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win, 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning when Brooks Carlson doubled to drive in Max Pinto for a 1-0 Samford lead.
  • The Bulldogs added a run in the second inning when Taylor Garris doubled to drive in Kaden Dreier to make the score 2-0.
  • Wofford plated a run in the bottom of the second inning and four more in the third to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Samford came back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score at 5-5. Garris doubled to drive in Dreier and Ryan Crockett for the first two runs on the inning. The tying run scored when Max Pinto singled up the middle to drive in Garris.
  • Wofford plated a run in the sixth inning and another run in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Jalon Long (1-2) took the loss on the mound for Samford, pithing 5.0 innings, giving up two runs, just one earned, on three hits.
  • Dalton Rhadans (5-0) earned the win for the Terriers, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Garris went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Pinto went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Wofford was led by Nolen Hester, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford took an early lead when Sonny DiChiara hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 Samford lead.
  • The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth inning when Dreier reached on an infield single, driving in Tyler McManus to push the Samford lead to 2-0.
  • Wofford came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 2-2.
  • Samford took the lead again in the sixth inning when McManus hit a solo homer to left field for a 3-2 Samford advantage.
  • The Bulldogs added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning when Garris scored on a ground out by DiChiara for a 4-2 Samford lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Wofford's Colin Davis hit a two-run home run to left field to tie the game again at 4-4.
  • Dichiara hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to give Samford a 6-4 lead.
  • Wofford came back with three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the 7-6 win. Brennen Dorighi, Davis and Trey Yunger drove in a run each in the inning for the Terriers. The winning run came on an infield single by Yunger, driving in Hester.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Chase Isbell (2-2) took the loss for Samford, pitching a third of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits.
  • Clay Schwaner (4-0) earned the win for the Terriers, tossing 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on one hit.
 
NOTABLES 
  • DiChiara homered twice and drove in four runs, going 2-for-5 at the plate.
  • McManus went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and one RBI.
  • For Wofford in game two, Davis went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.
 
 NEXT UP 
Samford will play a three-game series at VMI next weekend, April 7-8. The teams are set to play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. (CT) and a single game Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT).
