BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team won its home finale for the 2021 season by taking down cross-town rival UAB, 9-4 Tuesday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bulldogs got the game off to a hot start with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The majority of the damage came on a three-run home run by Towns King. Tyler McManus and Graham Dvorak also drove in a run each in the inning as Samford took a 5-0 lead.
Samford plated another run in the second inning to push its lead to 6-0. Brooks Carlson doubled down the left-field line to drive in Max Pinto for Samford's sixth run of the contest.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 9-0. McManus hit a two-run home run to left-center field, and King later scored on a wild pitch as Samford built a nine-run lead.
The Samford pitchers held UAB scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when the Blazers plated four runs. Colton Schultz hit a two-run home run and Thomas Johns hit a solo shot, while Jess Davis also drove in a run, cutting the lead to 9-4.

ON THE MOUND

Hamp Skinner (4-2) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no runs on just two hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Jacob Cravey, Carson Hobbs, Michael Ross, Mason McCormack, Billy Creger and John Brocklebank also saw time on the mound for Samford.
Tanner Rusk (1-3) took the loss for the Blazers, surrendering four runs on three hits in the first inning.

NOTABLES

McManus went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
King also homered for Samford, going 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Ayrton Schafer went 3-for-4 with a triple for the Bulldogs.
Carlson went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI for Samford.
UAB was led at the plate by Schultz, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.

NEXT UP
Samford will wrap up its regular season with a three-game series at ETSU Thursday and Friday. The teams are scheduled to play Thursday at 4 p.m. (CT) and a doubleheader Friday at 12 p.m. (CT).
