LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford baseball team swept a doubleheader at VMI Friday at Gray-Minor Stadium. In the first game, Samford earned a 25-1 in in seven innings. The 25 runs are the most ever scored by a Samford team in a Southern Conference game. In game two, the Bulldogs claimed an 11-5 victory.
Samford hit eight home runs in the two games combined, with
Max Pinto hitting three homers in game two. Pinto's feat marks the first time a Samford player has hit three homers in a game since 2016 when Heath Quinn hit three home runs against BYU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Samford got off to a hot start, plating six runs in the top of the first inning. Brooks Carlson, Tyler McManus, Will David, Taylor Garris and Max Pinto drove in a run each in the inning, and McManus scored on a wild pitch as Samford took a commanding 6-0 lead.
- VMI got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Samford lead to 6-1.
- In the top of the fifth inning, Samford added five more runs to push its lead to 11-1. McManus led the inning off with a solo home run to left field. Garris later singled to center field to drive in Kaden Dreier and Ryan Crockett. Carlson then doubled to drive in Pinto and Garris for a 10-run Samford lead.
- Samford added 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 23-1. Carlson and Garrett Howe both hit grand slams to account for eight of the 12 runs. Additionally, David, Garris, Pinto and Dreier drove in a run each in the inning.
- The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Davis Schwartz homered to left-center for the first run of the inning, and Ayrton Schafer later doubled to drive in Towns King for a 25-1 Samford lead.
ON THE MOUND
- Samuel Strickland (4-2) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford. He struck out eight batters without allowing a walk.
- Nathan Light (2-9) took the loss for VMI, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing 10 runs on seven hits.
NOTABLES
- Carlson went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a grand slam and a career-high seven RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- McManus went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI.
- Garris went 2-for-4 with four RBI as well for Samford.
- Schwartz and Howe also homered for Samford, the first home runs of both players' Samford career. Howe's homer was a grand slam.
- For VMI, Justin Starke went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Samford scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Pinto led the game off with a solo home run to right field. Dreier and Schafer also drove in a run each in the inning as Samford took a three-run lead.
- In the top of the second inning, Carlson singled to center field to drive in Pinto for a 4-0 Samford lead.
- In the bottom of the second inning, VMI came back with two runs to cut the Samford lead to 4-2.
- VMI added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
- In the top of the fifth inning, Pinto hit his second home run of the game to knot the score at 5-5.
- The Bulldogs took the lead again with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Schafer doubled to drive in Dreier for the first run of the inning. Schafer later scored on a ground out by David for a 7-5 Samford lead.
- In the top of the seventh inning, Pinto hit his third homer of the game, and McManus hit a home run as well as Samford pushed its lead to 9-5.
- Samford added two runs in the eighth inning with McManus and Crockett driving in a run each to make the score 11-5.
ON THE MOUND
- Jalon Long (2-2) earned the win in game two for Samford, pitching 6.1 innings in relief, allowing five runs, just four earned, on eight hits.
- Jacob Menders (4-3) took the loss for the Keydets, tossing 6.1 innings, giving up nine runs on 11 hits.
NOTABLES
- Pinto went 4-for-5 with a double, three home runs and three RBI.
- McManus went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
- For VMI, Stake went 4-for-5 with an RBI.
