Bulldogs Drop Sunday Road Match At Kennesaw State, 2-1

KENNESAW, Ga. –The Samford women's soccer team suffered its second loss of the fall season Sunday evening after coming up short against Kennesaw State by a final score of 2-1 at the Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

KEY PLAYS
  • Junior defender Alyssa Conarton denied the Owls an early lead after making a crucial stop just 12 minutes into the match after Kennesaw State's Tianna Rivera made her way around Samford goalkeeper Morgan McAslan for a prime opportunity in front of goal.
  • Fellow junior defender Kylie Gazza netted her first goal of the season to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 midway through the first half. Junior Taylor Yount fired off a shot to the left upper 90 which forced KSU's goalkeeper, Dylan Pixton, to make a save, resulting in a rebound opportunity for Gazza who put the ball away on a one-touch finish.
  • Moments later at the 25th minute mark, the Owls found their equalizer from Caeden Price after the red-shirt sophomore slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the net passed the hands of Morgan McAslan.
  • Kennesaw State's Macie Rainwater scored the game-winning goal for the Owls in the 59th minute, as Kathryn Schreck and Tianna Rivera were credited with assists on the play. Schreck served a ball into the box off a pass from Rivera, then Rainwater connected with the cross on the backend of the six-yard box and headed it to the left-side netting of the goal.

  • Samford tallied 17 shots on the evening compared to 10 for Kennesaw State.  
  • The Bulldogs also took a 5-2 advantage over the Owls in corner kicks.
  • Samford forced KSU into making a game-high eight saves, while the Bulldogs collected five of their own with senior Morgan McAslan in goal for the entire 90 minutes.
  • Both teams played a physical match for a combined 15 fouls with two yellow cards being awarded to Kennesaw State.  
 
UP NEXT
The Samford women's soccer team will continue on the road with its next contest on Thursday, Sep. 2 against SEC opponent Alabama. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
