BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford Athletics is continuing the Student-Athlete Spotlight series, presented by Coca-Cola, which, this week, will highlight
Ques Glover, a sophomore guard on the men's basketball team.
Glover is a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and he began is college career at the University of Florida before transferring to Samford. He talked a little about what brought him to Samford.
"Transferring entered by mind towards the last game of the season at Florida," Glover said. "I feel like I wanted a little bit more opportunity and when I entered my name in the portal, Coach Bucky (McMillan) reached out. We had a relationship prior to college basketball, we played them in high school. I remember after that high school game, I told my dad I would love to play for that guy someday, and when the opportunity came it was hard to turn down."
The Bulldogs are off to an 11-4 start so far this season. Included in the 11 wins are victories at Power 5 programs Oregon State and Ole Miss. Glover said winning games at bigger schools like that helps the confidence of the team.
"It builds our confidence tremendously," Glover said. "The first time when we beat Oregon State, it was just mind blowing, like, wow we did it. And then when we beat Ole Miss, we kind of felt like we were a contender this year and I feel like we can make some noise in the conference."
Glover said he feels like his experience playing at an SEC school has helped in those big games.
"I feel like the team just looks for me to be calm and collected in big moments," Glover said. "I feel like playing in those big arenas, that has really helped me my past few years and then coming here to be calm and collected in big moments when the team needs me to be."
Glover said coming into a new program as a leader right away was tough at first, but he has adjusted well.
"It was hard at the beginning, just because I feel like the team was looking to me to be a leader and everything was new to me," Glover said. "Coming from a different program and then coming here, I had to learn stuff and then now that I feel like I'm learning the system, learning the guys, I feel like I have more of a voice and I can be more of a leader."
The Bulldogs have made a habit of playing close games this season. Samford has played six games that have been decided by five points or less, posting a 5-1 record in those contests. Glover said he feels like the way the team practices has been a big factor in pulling out those tight contests.
"I feel like that just goes back to practice every day," Glover said. "We practice hard every day. We might come off a game that we won, we're still coming back the next day and practicing hard. We compete every day. I want to say thanks to the walk-ons, they push us too, and the coaches push us and I feel like that's why we win those close games."
Individually, Glover is currently second in the Southern Conference in both scoring (19.3 ppg.) and assists (4.4 apg.). Glover talked about what his goals were heading into the season.
"Really my main goal was just coming here and having the opportunity to show off my hark work," Glover said. "I've been working my whole life and really just coming here and helping Coach Bucky turn the program around, have a winning season and trying to make a run to the tournament and win the conference. That was my main goal."
