BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford head coach
Todd Yelton picked up his 300
th career win in the Bulldog soccer team's 1-0 victory over Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
Yelton is in his 21
st season at Samford, with 260 of his 300 career wins coming with the Bulldogs.
"I'm pretty blessed to be able to do most of those here," Yelton said of the milestone.
With the win, Samford improves to 7-3-6 overall and 3-1-3 in Southern Conference play. The win puts Samford in a tie for second place in the SoCon standings with Mercer and ETSU. The Bulldogs control their own destiny for being one of the top two seeds and hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. Western Carolina falls to 4-7-5 overall and 3-4-1 in league action.
The teams played through the first half in a scoreless tie. Samford's
Taylor Yount netted her third goal of the season off a deflection of a
Nikki Bario shot in the 63
rd minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
As a team, Samford took 19 shots, to just seven for Western Carolina. The Bulldogs had 10 corner kicks, to three for WCU.
Layton Glisson led Samford with three shots. Samford goalkeeper
Emma Donley had three saves in posting her second solo shutout of the season.
