GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS FURMAN (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will play at the Furman Paladins Friday evening at 5 p.m. (CT) at Stone Stadium, and then play at Wofford Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) at Snyder Field in a key season-ending road swing.
Samford enters the weekend with a mark of 7-3-6 overall and 3-1-3 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs control their own destiny for securing a top-two seed for the upcoming SoCon Tournament and hosting the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The Bulldogs most recently played host to Western Carolina last Sunday, earning a 1-0 victory.
Samford and Furman have met 21 previous times, with Samford holding an 11-6-4 lead in the series. Last season, the teams played twice. In the regular season, Samford earned a 4-0 win at home. They also played in the title game of the SoCon Tournament, with Samford winning, 4-2. The teams have played in each of the last three SoCon Tournament championship games. Samford and Wofford have played 17 previous times, with Samford owning a 13-0-4 series lead. Last season, Samford earned a 3-1 win over Wofford at home.
For the season, Samford has been led by
Kylie Gazza with four goals and one assist for a total of nine points.
Taylor Yount has accumulated three goals and two assists for a total of eight points. The Samford defense has been stellar again this season. The Bulldogs have allowed more than one goal just once in the regular season in a 2-2 tie with Mercer. Samford head coach
Todd Yelton recently earned his 300th career win. A total of 260 of those wins have come as the head coach at Samford.
Furman currently has a record of 8-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Southern Conference action. The Paladins played at VMI last Sunday, with Furman earning a 4-0 win over the Keydets. Nieva Gaither is currently leading Furman with five goals and seven assists for a total of 17 points. Stella Garcia has five goals and three assists for 13 total points. As a team, Furman ranks second in the Southern Conference in goals scored with 33, while Samford leads the league in fewest goals allowed with 11.
Wofford enters the weekend with a record of 7-6-3 overall and 2-3-2 in SoCon action. The Terriers dropped a 4-0 decision to UNCG last Sunday. Wofford also hosts Chattanooga Friday afternoon before taking on Samford on Sunday. The Terriers have been led so far this season by Ashley Grant with three goals and two assists for a total of eight points.
