BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team will play its first road contest of the season on Thursday, Nov. 17 when they take on the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M at 7:00 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
Thursday' contest will be streamed live on Alabama A&M Athletics' YouTube Channel.
The Bulldogs hold a 5-1 series advantage over Alabama A&M, with victories in three of their last four meetings. Samford bested Alabama A&M 52-50 in the most recent contest on Dec. 11, 2021. Jermaine Marshall led the Bulldogs with 12 points and a season-high 14 rebounds in the victory.
Samford improved to 3-0 with a 90-38 home win against Belhaven University on Saturday, Nov. 12. Marshall led the Bulldogs with 15 points and eight rebounds in the victory while Logan Dye added 14 points.
Sophomore forward Achor Achor made his highly anticipated debut for the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Chipola College transfer tallied 11 points and four rebounds while shooting 83 percent (5-6) from the floor in 11 minutes of work.
The Bulldogs come into the week ranking second in the SoCon in scoring average (93 PPG) and leading the conference in scoring defense (61.3 PPG), scoring margin (+31,7), and rebounding offense (43.3 RPG)
Three Bulldogs ranked in the top 20 in the SoCon in scoring average at the beginning of the week, with Marshall's 17.3 PPG ranking seventh in the league. Jaden Campbell (14.3 PPG) came in ranking 13th and Dye (12 PPG) 16th.
Marshall began the week ranking seventh in the conference in rebounding average (7.7 RPG) while Dye ranked 12th (6.7RPG). Marshall also ranked 10th in field goal percentage (61%) while Campbell ranked fifth (64%).
Alabama A&M (0-2) fell 87-76 at Tennessee State in its most recent contest on Monday, Nov. 14. The Bulldogs opened their 2022-23 campaign with an 84-76 loss at home against North Alabama on Thursday, Nov. 10.
Otis Hughley Jr. begins his first season with the program after spending the last seven seasons coaching internationally. He served as the Head Coach of the Nigerian Women's National Team from 2017-2022, guiding them to three Afro-Basket Championships (2017, 2019, 2021), a No. 1 world ranking in Africa, No. 14 in the world and a berth in the 2022 World Cup. He additionally spent two seasons in the NBA, working as an assistant for the Sacramento Kings (2010-11) and a development coach for the Golden State Warriors (2011-12).
Garrett Hicks, a two-time Preseason All-SWAC selection, leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 19 points per game through two contests. Dailin Smith (14.5 PPG) and Cameron Tucker (10 PPG) are averaging double-digit scoring totals
