BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Bulldogs will play their first of four home games in seven days on Sunday, Nov. 20 when they welcome in the Tigers of Texas Southern University.
Sunday's tilt with the Tigers will begin at 2:00 p.m. (CST) and be streamed live on
ESPN+.
Samford improved to 4-0 with an 84-64 win at Alabama A&M on Thursday, Nov. 17.
Achor Achor led the Bulldogs with 18 points and eight rebounds in the victory while
Ques Glover scored 16 points and
Bubba Parham and
A.J. Staton-McCray both added 13 points and seven rebounds.
In three previous home games played this season, Samford has outscored its opponents 279-184. The Bulldogs are averaging 93 points and 43.3 rebounds while posting a +11 turnover margin in games played at the Pete Hanna Center.
The Bulldogs come into the weekend ranking second in the SoCon in scoring average (90.8 PPG) and scoring defense (62 PPG). Samford leads the league in scoring margin (+28.8), rebounding offense (46.5 RPG), and steals per game (9.8)
The Bulldogs have attempted more free throws than any other SoCon team this season, converting on a league-best 88 shots in 121 attempts (73%). Samford's average of 22 made free throws per game currently ranks fourth in the nation
Pace of play continues to be emphasized in 2022-23. The Bulldogs have attempted a league-high 267 shots while converting 123 for an efficiency of 46 percent.
Bench play has proven to be pivotal through four games. The Bulldogs are averaging 43 bench points per contest, a mark that leads the SoCon and ranks seventh among D-I schools.
Jermaine Marshall and Glover both rank in the top 20 in the SoCon in scoring average, with Marshall coming in ninth at 15 points per game and Glover 20th at 12 points per contest.
Marshall also currently ranks fifth in the conference in rebounding average (7.3 RPG) while Dye ranks 14th (6.3 RPG). Staton-McCray has posted a conference-high nine steals and is averaging 2.3 swipes per contest.
The Bulldogs have met the Tigers only one other time in program history, falling 80-77 in overtime on Dec. 28 of the 1996-97 season. Samford has seen success lately against SWAC opponents, logging three-straight victories in games against teams from the conference
Texas Southern (1-5) comes into Sunday's match on the heels of a 72-56 loss at Auburn on Friday, Nov. 18. The Tigers battled Auburn tough and trailed them just 29-27 at halftime.
The Tigers gave Arizona State its lone loss of the season with a 67-66 overtime home victory on Nov. 13. P.J Henry led the Tigers with a 22-point effort in the win.
Texas Southern is averaging 61 points per game while conceding 78.5 points per contest. The Tigers have been one of the best rebounding teams in the SWAC this season, coming in with a rate of 37 boards per game that ranks third in the conference.
Henry is one of three Tigers averaging double figures in scoring with a clip of 14.8 points per contest. John Walker III (11.7 PPG) and Zytarious Mortle (11.5 PPG) are also averaging in double digits.
Johnny Jones is in his fifth season as Texas Southern's Head Men's Basketball Coach. Prior to arriving at TSU, Jones served as the Nevada Wolf Pack's associate head coach for one season. Jones came to Nevada after five seasons as the head coach at LSU.
