Bulldogs Complete Sweep Of Arkansas State With 11-0 Win Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team closed out the sweep of Arkansas State with a dominating 11-0 win over the Red Wolves Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford improves to 3-0 with the win. Arkansas State falls to 0-3 with the setback.

"Especially with the level of inexperience we have on this team, it would have been easy to win the first two and have just showed up today," Samford head coach Tony David said. "A lot of that tone was set with zeros early. Jalon (Long) obviously set the tone early with three-straight strike outs to start the game. We scored a run in the first and in the second, and then we had three in the third and it was a big overhand right to them. Showing up today and taking care of business says a lot about the make up of this team despite their inexperience."

In the win for Samford, Towns King went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Kaden Dreier also homered for the Bulldogs, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Stephen Klein went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

Samford's Jalon Long (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on three hits, and striking out eight batters. Dominic Ganley, Drew Byers, Cole Fryman, Colin Ahearn and Garrett Brown all pitched in the game as well, with six Samford pitchers combining for a five-hit shutout.

For Arkansas State, Daedrick Cail went 2-for-3 at the plate. Tyler Jeans (0-1) took the loss for the Red Wolves, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits.

Samford plated a run in the first inning and another in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs broke the game open with three runs in the third inning to stretch the lead to 5-0. King hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Colton Ledbetter for the first run of the inning. Dreier then hit a two-run home run to left-center field to give Samford a five-run lead.

The Bulldogs plated three runs in the fifth inning to make the score 8-0. King hit a two-run homer to center field for the first two runs of the inning. Klein later doubled to drive in Dreier for the inning's final run.

Samford added three final runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 11-0. Garrett Howe drove in two runs and Klein drove in one in the inning for an 11-run Samford advantage.

Samford will play at Alabama State Tuesday evening. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Montgomery, Ala.
