TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Samford University baseball team battled 11
th-ranked Florida State, eventually falling by a score of 7-1 in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.
With the loss, Samford falls to 4-2 on the season. Florida State improves to 5-1 with the victory.
Samford was led at the plate by
Will David, going 2-for-4 with a double.
Garrett Staton homered in a 1-for-2 performance, driving in one run.
Garrett Howe and
Towns King also had one hit each for the Bulldogs.
Blake Bortak (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Samford, pitching 4.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
For Florida State, Reese Albert went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Treyton Rank went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI for the Seminoles. Bryce Hubbard (2-0) earned the win on the mound for the Seminoles, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits.
Florida State scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Alex Toral doubled down the right field line to drive in Isaiah Perry for the run in the first inning. In the second inning, Perry singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Jordan Carrion for a two-run Seminole lead.
In the sixth inning, Florida State plated two more runs to push its lead to 4-0. Rank singled to right center field to drive in James Tibbs for the first run of the inning. The second run of the sixth inning was plated when Albert singled to center field to drive in Rank.
Samford plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the FSU lead to 4-1. Staton homered to right center field to bring Samford to within three runs.
The Seminoles added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to push their lead to 7-1. Colton Vincent, Rank and Albert drove in a run each for FSU in the inning.
The teams will conclude their series with a game Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) at Dick Howser Stadium.
