Baseball Falls At Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision at Jacksonville State Tuesday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 10-8 on the season. Jacksonville State improves to 8-10 with the win.
 
Stephen Klein drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance to lead Samford at the plate. Will Lynch (0-1) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
 
Jacksonville State was led by Cole Frederick, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Mason Maners and Isaac Alexander drove in two runs each for the Gamecocks. Trey Fortner (1-2) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit to earn the win for Jacksonville State.
 
Jacksonville State jumped out on top with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Maners singled to left field to drive in Brennen Norton for the game's first run. Alexander then hit a two-run home run to left field for a 3-0 Gamecock lead.
 
Samford came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Klein singled to right field to drive in Garrett Howe and Maurice Hampton to bring Samford to within one run.
 
The Gamecocks plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push their lead to 5-2. Brooks Bryan singled to center field to drive in Alex Strachan for the first run of the inning. Derrick Jackson later doubled to right center to drive in Bryan for a three-run JSU lead.
 
Jacksonville State added four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 9-2. T.J. Reeves and Frederick scored on an error for the first two runs of the inning. Norton doubled to drive in Strachan, and Norton later scored on a sacrifice fly by Maners for a seven-run Gamecock lead.
 
Samford will play a three-game series at UCF this weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
