Baseball Takes Game Three At Charleston Southern, 9-4

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford baseball team took the final game of its three-game series at Charleston Southern, winning by a score of 9-4 Sunday afternoon at the CSU Ballpark.

With the win, Samford improves to 7-4 on the season. Charleston Southern falls to 8-5 with the loss.

"Great job by our guys to get out of here with the win today," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Energy was good right out of the gate and Will (David) came up with a huge tone-setting single to put us up."

Samford was led at the plate by Towns King, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Will David went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Bulldogs. Stephen Klein homered, driving in two runs in a 1-for-3 performance. Jalon Long (2-0) pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out six batters to earn the win for the Bulldogs.

"I just can't say enough about Jalon," David said. "He escaped a bases loaded, no out jam in the first and just dominated again for us. Another amazing day defensively. Errorless weekend by our infield again on a challenging surface."

For Charleston Southern, Austen Izzio went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Evan Truitt (1-2) took the loss for the Bucs, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.

Samford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. David singled to right field to drive in King and Garrett Howe for a two-run Bulldog lead.

With one out in the top of the second inning, Klein hit a solo home run to right field for a 3-0 Samford lead.

Samford broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, plating four runs to push the lead to 7-0. King singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Colton Ledbetter and Andrew Bennett for the first two runs of the inning. Kaden Dreier later doubled down the left-field line to drive in King and Howe for a seven-run Samford lead.

Charleston Southern got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-1. Connor Aldrich scored from third base on a ground out by Izzio.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to push their lead to 9-1. Colton Ledbetter scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Klein then walked with the bases loaded, scoring Joseph Salvo for an eight-run Samford lead. CSU plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 9-4.

Samford will play at cross-town rival UAB on Tuesday, March 8. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Young Memorial Field.
