BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Several Samford seniors worked out for professional scouts from NFL, CFL and USFL teams at the annual Pro Day, held Wednesday at UAB's Legacy Pavilion.
 
Quarterback Liam Welch, wide receiver/kick returner Montrell Washington, wide receiver Jai'Rus Creamer, defensive backs Coutrell Plair and Joshua Carter, kicker Coby Neenan and defensive lineman Armond Lloyd all performed for the scouts in hopes of catching a team's eye for the upcoming seasons.
 
"Good, not bad at all," Washington said when asked about his performance. "Weather was a little cold, but other than that it wasn't bad. It was a solid day."
 
Welch said he was happy with how he performed during the workouts.
 
"I think there's always room for improvement, but I gave it my best shot out there," Welch said. "Hopefully that was good enough."
 
Washington had a big season as both a wide receiver and return specialist in 2021. He said he feels like his playmaking skills would be a big asset to any professional team.
 
"I'm just versatile," Washington said. "Whatever a team needs, that's what I can do. My punt return ability is, I think, out of this world. Just my playmaking ability overall can help any organization."
 
Welch was Samford's starting quarterback the last two seasons, putting up impressive numbers throughout those two campaigns. He said he feels like he can help build a winning culture for any professional team that might be interested in him.   
 
"I feel like I can bring a winning attitude to help develop a winning locker room," Welch said. "And then if I get the chance to be on the field, I can help the team win."
 
Creamer is a wide receiver who improved steadily throughout his five seasons at Samford. Plair and Carter were key parts of the Samford defensive secondary the last few seasons. Lloyd was one of the leaders of the defensive line during the 2021 season. Neenan came to Samford for the 2021 season from UAB, handling kickoffs for the Bulldogs during the 2021 campaign.
 
The 2022 NFL Draft will take place April 28-30 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
