Baseball Opens Series At UNC Greensboro With 5-3 Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University baseball team opened its Southern Conference series at UNC Greensboro with a 5-3 win over the Spartans Friday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

"I'm proud of this group," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We've been hit by some crazy injuries that had some important guys out of the lineup. We got some really timely hits and played great defense all night. This is how we have to win."

With the win, Samford improves to 18-17 overall and 5-2 in Southern Conference play. UNC Greensboro falls to 15-23 overall and 0-7 in league action.

For Samford in the win, Will David and Kaden Dreier each went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Towns King went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Bulldogs. Jacob Cravey (1-3) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out six batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Carson Hobbs picked up his seventh save of the season, tossing the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit.

"This was a great win by our guys in a really well-played game, top to bottom," David said. "Cravey was great again on the mound. (Alex) Goff and Hobbs then finished it off."

UNCG was led by Kennedy Jones, going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Jared Mathewson (3-5) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits to take the loss for the Spartans.

Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the fourth inning. King led the inning off with a bunt single and advanced to third base on an error. King then scored on a sacrifice fly by David for a 1-0 Samford lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Samford added four runs to push its lead to 5-0. King singled to right field to drive in Blake Bortak for the first run of the inning. David then doubled to right field to drive in Garrett Staton for a three-run Samford lead. Dreier then doubled to left field to drive in David and King to make it a five-run Bulldog advantage.

UNC Greensboro answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 5-2. Jones doubled to center field to drive in G.C. Jarman and Dallas Callahan to bring the Spartans to within three runs.

The Spartans added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mitchell Smith scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-3.

Samford and UNC Greensboro will continue their series with a game Saturday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CT) from the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
