CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford baseball team fell behind early and could not catch up as the Bulldogs fell at The Citadel, 10-0 in seven innings, in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
With the loss, Samford falls to 24-25 overall and 10-8 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel improves to 24-26 overall and 4-14 in SoCon action.
"Coming off the heartbreaking loss yesterday when we played so well, I felt it was critical to get off to a good start," Samford head coach
Tony David said. "And it was the opposite for us on the mound again Sunday. We really hit the ball hard with runners on the first four innings, around a lot of walks and hit-by-pitches and had zero to show for it. We have no other option but to regroup and win a series at home next weekend against a good Mercer team."
Garrett Howe doubled to lead the game off for Samford's lone hit of the contest.
Jalon Long (2-5) took the loss on the mound for Samford, tossing two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs on four hits.
The Citadel was led by Tilo Skole, going 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Cole Simpson homered and drove in three runs for The Citadel. Fisher Paulsen (5-3) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit to earn the win on the mound for The Citadel.
The Citadel got off to a hot start, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Two of the runs came on a home run by Simpson, while Ryan McCarthy and Wells Sykes drove in a run each in the inning as The Citadel took an early 4-0 lead.
The home Bulldogs then added two more runs in the second inning for a 6-0 advantage. Sykes drove in another run, as did Sawyer Reeves for a six-run Citadel advantage.
The Citadel also scored a run each in the fourth and sixth inning to push its lead to 8-0. Simpson drove in the run in the fourth inning, and Noah Mitchell scored on a Samford error for the run in the sixth inning.
The home team closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the contest due to the mercy rule, 10-0 after seven innings. McCarthy and Sykes both walked with the bases loaded to end the contest.
Samford will host Auburn on Tuesday, May 17 at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the following link:
