SAMFORD'S ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL MEMBERS (PDF)
SPARTANBURG, S.C.— Samford Athletics placed 269 student-athletes on the Southern Conference's Academic Honor Roll, released by the league Wednesday afternoon. The 269 Samford student-athletes on the team are the second most of any Southern Conference school.
The Academic Honor Roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists. The award is different from the Academic All-Conference award, announced Tuesday, which is determined by cumulative GPA and involves a participation requirement.
Of Samford's 269 student-athletes to make the team, the football squad led the way with 58 members. The women's track and field and cross-country teams combined for 37 representatives, followed by men's track and field and cross-country, combining to place 29 members on the squad. The soccer team placed 27 players on the team, followed by baseball with 24.
The Samford softball team had 19 members on the team, followed by men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball with 14 each. Women's tennis placed 11 players on the team, while men's golf and women's golf had eight each, followed by men's tennis with six.
A total of 59 of Samford's entries received the Commissioner's Medal for having a GPA of 3.80 or higher, with five of those posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Overall on the team, there were 2,428 selections. A total of 711 earned Commissioner's Medals, while 264 finished with 4.0 GPAs.
