BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team hosted in-state rival Troy in an exhibition contest Sunday night at Shauna Yelton Field, earning an impressive 5-1 victory over the Trojans.
"We came out flying," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "It's the first time we had the chance to play somebody else. Everything was going really well for us, really across the board. Troy's not an easy team to break down with the formation they play. In the first half, it was kind of a dream start, to be honest with you. All of the kids gave a really great effort, and I thought we did a pretty good job with it."
Samford got the scoring started in the 21
st minute on a goal by
Taylor Yount.
Whitaker Buchanan then followed with a pair of goals, one in the 28
th minute and another in the 29
th minute for a 3-0 Samford lead.
Lindsay Worthington then netted a goal in the 45
th minute to send Samford to halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
In the second half,
Mary Raymond added a goal in the 57
th minute for a 5-0 Bulldog lead. Troy got on the scoreboard when Jayla Gage netted a goal in the 58
th minute to cut the Samford lead to 5-1.
Samford will play another exhibition game at Mississippi State on Thursday, Aug. 11. The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. start from Starkville, Miss.
