GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT TENNESSEE TECH (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will travel to Cookeville, Tenn. to take on former OVC rival Tennessee Tech Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
Samford and Tennessee Tech will be meeting for the 12th time in women's soccer, with Samford owning an 8-2-1 series lead. The teams last met on Sept. 12, 2010, with Samford earning a 2-0 home victory. The teams were co-members of the Ohio Valley Conference from 2003 to 2007, before Samford moved to the SoCon for the 2008 season.
The Bulldogs enter Thursday night's contest with a record of 3-2-3. Samford played at UAB last Thursday, falling by a score of 1-0. The Bulldogs then hosted 14th-ranked Auburn, playing the Tigers to a 1-1 tie at Shauna Yelton Field. In the Auburn game, senior goalkeeper
Morgan McAslan saved five shots, including a penalty kick, allowing just the one goal. McAslan was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts.
Taylor Yount scored Samford's lone goal in the tie.
For the season, Samford has been led by
Whitaker Buchanan and
Kylie Gazza with two goals each.
Nikki Bario leads the team in assists with three so far this season. As a team, through the first eight matches of the season, Samford has surrendered just five goals to its opponents. The Bulldogs have netted nine goals as a team so far this season.
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles come into the week with a mark of 2-3-2. Tennessee Tech has earned wins over Furman (4-1) and Middle Tennessee (3-1), has tied Western Kentucky (1-1) and Chattanooga (1-1) and fell to IUPUI (1-0), Lipscomb (4-0) and Tennessee (7-0).
So far this season, Tennessee Tech has been led offensively by Chloe Smith with three goals and three assists for a total of nine points. Yao Giada Zhou has one goal and four assists for six points. Maggie Conrad has been the Golden Eagles' main goalkeeper so far this season, saving 33 shots and posting a record of 2-3-2.
