GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University soccer team picked up its first Southern Conference win of the season with a dramatic 2-1 victory at UNC Greensboro Friday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
With the win, Samford improves to 5-3-4 overall and 1-1-1 in SoCon play. UNCG falls to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1 in league action.
The teams played through the first half in a scoreless tie. UNCG got on the scoreboard first when Hannah Morton scored off an assist from Gabi Santora in the 57
th minute of the match for a 1-0 Spartan lead. Samford knotted the score when
Kylie Gazza scored on a penalty kick in the 59
th minute to make the score 1-1. In the 82
nd minute of the match
Kyla Reynolds scored off an assist from
Whitaker Buchanan to give the Bulldogs the lead for good at 2-1.
Gazza's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season, while Reynolds' was her second of the campaign. As a team, Samford outshot UNCG, 15-3. Samford had five corner kicks, to just one for UNCG.
