Stanton Named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior running back Jay Stanton was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week when the league announced its weekly football awards on Monday.

This is Stanton's first SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honor of the year and the first of his illustrious Bulldog career.

In the 27-14 victory at VMI, Stanton paced the Bulldogs with his third 100+ yard rushing performance in his last four outings. The senior finished Saturday with 145 yards on 21 carries and a pair of touchdowns. After his performance against VMI, Stanton only needs 23 yards to pass Jerome Russell for the second-most career rushing yards by a Bulldog in program history.

On the season, Stanton ranks second in the SoCon with 584 rushing yards on 103 carries. Stanton's 12 rushing touchdowns also ranks him second in the league and 12th in the nation.

Samford will welcome The Citadel to Birmingham on Oct. 28 for Homecoming 2023 and the first full game played at the recently renamed Pete Hanna Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and tickets can be found at SamfordTickets.com.
