Baseball Drops Series Opener at No. 1 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Samford Baseball team fell 11-1 in seven innings to No. 1 LSU on Friday, March 10.

With the loss, Samford drops to 6-7 on the year while the Tigers improve to 13-1.

Garrett Staton led the Bulldogs on offense with a hit and a run scored. The sophomore second baseman also logged a stolen base on the night.

Garrett Howe and Kaden Dreier each added a hit in the contest.

Jacob Cravey (1-2) took the loss in game one. The junior right-hander conceded just two earned runs on five hits over five innings while striking out four.

The Tigers scratched their first run of the game in the bottom of the first when a leadoff walk and hit batsman set the stage for a run to come around on a Bulldog throwing error on the backend of 6-4 fielder's choice.

LSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with a pair of one-out singles and a walk, but Cravey was able to dance out of danger by striking out the next two hitters.

The Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Staton crossed home on a Tiger wild pitch, who led off the frame with an infield single to second. Dreier brought Staton to third by executing a perfect hit and run through the right side before scoring.

The Tigers tacked a run in both the third and fourth innings via sacrifice fly before Jared Jones launched his first two-run blast of the game in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-1. A throwing error by the Bulldogs to lead off the inning left the door open for Jones to come to the plate with two away.

LSU broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth by scoring six runs on five hits. Tre' Morgan brought home the frame's first run with an RBI single up the middle, which was followed by a two-run double from Tommy White to make it 8-1. A Bulldog throwing error brought in the next run before Jones plated the game's final two runs on his second two-run shot of the game.

The Bulldogs will play the second game of their three-game weekend series against LSU on Saturday, March 11. First pitch from Baton Rouge, La. is slated for 6:30 p.m. (CST).

"Overall I thought we competed well," Head. Coach Tony David said. "Cravey really kept them in check through five innings. The story was too many extra chances. We had a realistic opportunity to take a 1-0 lead into the 6th. Our guys handled the environment and large crowd well against what many think is the best pitcher in the nation. We look forward to the challenge again tomorrow."
