Bulldogs Sweep Saturday Doubleheader Against UT Martin

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team clinched a series victory over UT Martin with a doubleheader sweep of the Skyhawks on Saturday, taking the first game 4-1 and the second game 6-4.

The wins increase the Bulldogs' winning streak to four games and improve their record to 9-10 on the season.

GAME ONE
Andrew Bennett and Garrett Staton had the big bats in game one, with each launching a home run and driving in two. Garrett Howe and Josh Rodriguez each added a hit and a run.

Jacob Cravey (2-2) was lights out on the mound, striking out a career-high 13 batters and giving up just one run on four base hits. The junior righty needed just 96 pitches to log his second complete-game victory of the season.

Samford cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Bennett and Staton both left the yard to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Bennett gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead by ripping his second home run of the season, while Staton blasted a two-run shot for his second big fly of the year.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth in the form of an RBI knock from Bennett. Howe kept the inning going by logging a two-out, broken-bat single and advanced to second on a wild pitch later to set up Bennett's RBI opportunity.

The Skyhawks played their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth courtesy of a solo home run from Nate Self.

Cravey held UT Martin to a minuscule .167 batting average (4-24) on the day, including a mark of .143 (1-7) with two outs. He induced four groundouts and three fly-outs.

GAME TWO
Stephen Klein knocked a pair of hits for the Bulldogs in game two, while Jayden Davis registered a run, hit, and RBI. Staton and Bennett each scored twice and knocked a pair of hits.

Trey Sanders (1-0) earned the win in relief. The redshirt-freshman righty struck out one over a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Ben Petschke (3) locked down his third save of the season by retiring the side in order in the seventh.

UT Martin tallied its first run of game four in the top of the fourth when Blaze Bell brought in Will Smith with an RBI single to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage.

The Skyhawks hung three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Andrew Fernandez provided the first of two big two-out hits by the Skyhawks by driving in a pair which was followed by a run-scoring infield hit from Smith.

Samford promptly responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, crossing the plate twice on wild pitches and getting another on a Davis RBI single.

The Bulldogs broke through and took the lead on a three-run double by Klein with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. How and Bennett worked a pair of walks to lead off the inning and were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Rodriguez before a throwing error with two outs loaded the bases for Klein.

The Bulldogs and Skyhawks will play the third and final game of their weekend set on Sunday, March 19. First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 1:00 p.m. (CST).
