Baseball Picks Up Doubleheader Sweep Over Morehead State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team took both games of its doubleheader against Morehead State on Friday, March 3, winning game one 10-1 and using a walk-off home run from John Anderson in game two to win 2-0.

The victories improve Samford to 6-4 on the year while Morehead State drops to 8-3.

"Today was a great day by our guys all day that started long before the first pitch," Head Coach Tony David said. "Handling the delay, getting here hours before to get tarp off, and working the field all played a role in getting the job done. All across the board we were great on the mound. Cravey was incredible in the first one, then Brody and Ben were incredible the second game. Ben made a ton of big time pitches with runners on. We caught the ball well again today, but the outfield was difference maker."

GAME ONE
Jacob Cravey (1-1) went the distance in game one, striking out seven batters and conceding one run on one hit in seven innings of labor.

Blake Bortak (4) and Garrett Staton (3) combined for seven runs batted in, with Bortak launching a three-run home run in the sixth. Both knocked a pair of hits and scored twice.

Joshua Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs while Garrett Howe scored a team-high three runs on two hits. Lucas Steele and Stephen Klein both clubbed a double, with Steele accounting for a pair of hits.

The Eagles logged their lone run of the game via a leadoff home run in the top of the first. Following a walk one batter later, Cravey went on to retire the next 21 batters in order to notch the complete game.

The Bulldogs eventually cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, using four-consecutive singles to lead off the inning and climb out to a 2-1 lead after RBI hits from Howe and Staton. Rodriguez delivered the final blow of the inning with a two-RBI single to center.

After grabbing two runs in the fifth on an RBI sac fly from Staton and an Eagle throwing error, the Bulldogs hung four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single to center from Staton accounted for the first run of the inning, with Bortak's three-run blast putting the game out of reach.

GAME TWO
John Anderson's walk-off home run served as his team-leading third of the season and was set up by a two-out hit batsman by Klein.

Ben Petschke (2-1) struck out six batters over the final four innings to earn the win. Starter Brody Westbrooks conceded just three hits over the game's first four innings while striking out a pair in the no-decision.

" There were lots of opportunities for both teams in game two," David said. I thought we swung it better than the numbers showed against two good arms. John had the big swing to win it. That was a big-time at-bat from him."

The Bulldogs and Eagles will play the third and final game of their weekend series on Saturday. First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 1:00 p.m. (CST).
