Baseball Drops Midweek Contest to No. 18 Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team fell 11-6 to the 18th-ranked Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama on Tuesday, March 7 from Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the loss, Samford drops to 6-6 while Alabama Improves to 13-0.

Garrett Howe led the Bulldogs with a pair of RBIs in the contest while Jayden Davis scored twice. Stephen Klein added a run and a hit.

Carson Hobbs (1-1) shouldered the loss, conceding two runs over 1.2 innings of work and striking out a pair. Turner Thompson tossed a game-high 2.1 innings of relief while Ben Petschke struck out four batters over two innings of one-hit relief.

Alabama tallied three runs over its first two at-bats, with a one-triple to right by Andrew Pinckney putting them on top in the first. The Crimson Tide struck for two more in the second via the solo homer, with Jim Jarvis and Colby Shelton accounting for the damage done to put Alabama up 3-0.

Following a solo shot from Drew Williamson in the top of the third, the Crimson Tide hung four runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of two-run blasts to go up. Dominic Tamez knocked the first and Shelton socked the next, his second of the game.

The Crimson Tide extended their lead to 11-0 in the top of the sixth, with a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double to right-center by Caden Rose accounting for the damage.

The Bulldogs responded their next time up by scoring five runs to get within striking distance. A bases-loaded wild pitch plated the inning's first run, followed by an RBI walk from Steele that set the stage for a two-run single by Howe to make it 11-4. An Alabama throwing error brought in the frame's final run.

Samford was able to scratch one more run in the bottom of the seventh before giving way to the 11-6 final score. Davis crossed the plate via wild pitch after a one-out fielder choice, a single from Klein, and a walk by John Anderson loaded the bases. After a hit batsman from Steele loaded the bases back up, Crimson Tide reliever Zane Probst got Alabama out of a bases-loaded jam by recording a punchout.

The Bulldogs will stay in the SEC for their next opponent, taking on No. 1 LSU on Friday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. (CST) for the first of three games in Baton Rouge.
