Baseball Falters Late at Troy

TROY, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh at Troy University on Tuesday evening but ultimately fell 7-6 to the Trojans in midweek action.

With the loss, the Bulldogs' record drops to 18-15 overall while Troy improves to 23-11.

Andrew Bennett enjoyed a monster night at the plate, slugging a pair of home runs and driving in four. Jayden Davis knocked a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 17 games while also walking twice and scoring a run.

Stephen Klein and John Anderson both socked a double, with Klein also driving in a run.

Turner Thompson (0-1) shouldered the loss, allowing a run on three hits in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Gaeto struck out four batters over a game-high three innings while Jake Holifield added two innings of relief.

Starter Jacob Newman worked the first two innings, conceding three runs on three hits.

The Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard in their first at-bat of the evening, tallying four runs in the top of the first. Klein brought in the inning's first run on a double to right center while Andrew Bennett accounted for the big blow with a three-run shot to left field to put Samford up 4-0.

Troy cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the first, using a two-run single from Caleb Bartolero that took advantage of three walks by the Bulldogs in the inning.

The Trojans added a run in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded hit batsman while a highlight-reel home run robbery by Aaron Walton in left-center in the bottom of the third kept the Bulldogs on top 4-3. Troy went on to tie the score on a Donovan Whibbs solo shot in the fourth.

Bennett's second home of the day and sixth of the season put the Bulldogs up 5-4 in the sixth, with a bases-loaded walk by Klein adding another run in the frame. A pair of one-out singles by Josh Rodriguez and Hayden Perry, followed by a two-out walk from Davis, set the stage for Klein.

Troy evened the score in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run homer by Tremayne Cobb Jr. and took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded single by Ethan Kavanagh. The Trojans loaded up the bases in the inning by working a leadoff walk and adding a pair of one-out singles.

"That was a really-well played college baseball game," Head Coach Tony David said. "I thought the pitchers on both sides did a really good job adjusting to the zone tonight. In the end, they hit a couple of balls to and over the right-field wall late which ended up being the difference. Alex was outstanding in relief especially. Our guys battled at the plate against some good arms. We just ended up not being enough against a really good team."

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, April 14 when they play game one of a three-game weekend set against Toledo at Joe Lee Griffin Field, with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m. (CST).
