Baseball’s Late Rally Falls Short in 11-10 Loss at UNA

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team came within one run of erasing a seven-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning at North Alabama on Tuesday evening, but ultimately fell 11-10 to the Lions.
With the loss, Samford drops to 16-13 while UNA improves to 6-21.
The Bulldogs trailed 11-4 heading into the top of ninth and made things interesting when John Anderson whacked a one-out grand slam to trim the Lions' lead to 11-8. Leadoff walks by Parker McDonald and Garrett Howe, followed by a hit batsman from Stephen Klein, set the stage for Anderson's RBI opportunity.
Freshman outfielder Aaron Walton followed Anderson's team-leading eighth blast of the season with a solo shot to make it 11-9. Josh Rodriguez brought in Andrew Bennett with an RBI double two batters later but was thrown out at third trying to stretch his hit into a triple for the inning's second out. Pinch-hitter Kace Garner's potential game-tying home run fell a few feet short of the wall for the final out.
"I'm proud of the way we fought until the end again and gave ourselves a chance," Head Coach Tony David said. "We put together lots of great at-bats late and Josh did a good job of trying to stretch his into a triple. It would have been the tying run with one out and they made a play. Kace gave it a good ride to the wall to finish it."
Howe led the Bulldogs with his third three-hit game of the season while driving in a run and scoring once. Rodriguez and Walton both knocked a pair of hits and scored a run while Lucas Steele and Garrett Staton both picked up an RBI.
Cole Fryman (0-1) took the loss on the mound and was one of eight Bulldogs to see action on the night. Jacob Newman surrendered three runs on three hits over the first three innings while Nicholas Angelakos, Dominic Ganley, and Jake Holifield all notched an inning of scoreless relief.
"At the end of the day, it's a horribly disappointing loss," David said. "We just were not good enough on the mound. These nights with the turnaround league game on Thursday, we have to use it to try to give guys the opportunity to earn more innings. We had a couple of guys take advantage but more did not."
The Bulldogs struck first in the contest, tallying three runs on two hits in the top of the second inning. Staton drove in the inning's first run on an RBI fielder's choice while Howe brought in the second run on an RBI single that resulted in a throwing error which brought in the frame's final run.
North Alabama tied the contest in the bottom half of the second on a Drew Hudson three-run homer and went on to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three runs on four hits. RBI singles from Jackson Ferrigno and Jackson Cheek and an RBI fielder's choice from Ethan Walker accounted for the damage done.
The Lions took advantage of three walks to score three runs on three hits and take a 9-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. A bases-loaded passed ball, an RBI walk, and a two-out single from Gehrig Frei provided for the scoring action in the inning.
A Steele sacrifice fly in the seventh inning made the score 10-4, but the Lions would get that run back in the eighth on a Hudson sac fly to go up 11-4 and set the stage for the ninth inning.
"We had too many guys not throw enough strikes and they had several guys that had struggled to throw strikes in the past do a good job tonight," David said. "Thursday is what matters though. We've got a good UNCG team coming to our place and we'll have Cravey here to greet them."
The Bulldogs will welcome the Spartans of UNCG to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a three-game series later this week, beginning with a 6:00 p.m. contest on Thursday evening.
