BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team fell 4-2 to the UNCG Spartans in game two of their Southern Conference series on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 17-14 overall and 6-2 in SoCon play while the Spartans improve to 16-15 overall and 4-4 in league competition.

Stephen Klein led the Bulldogs at the plate with a 3-3 performance, slugging a home run and a pair of doubles. The senior first baseman continues to feast on SoCon pitching, posting a .655 (19-29) batting average against conference opponents with six home runs and 13 RBI.

Jayden Davis registered a run and a hit to extend his current hitting streak to 15 games, while John Anderson accounted for a run batted in.

Brody Westbrooks (2-2) took the loss on the day, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out three. Jake Holifield tossed the final four frames out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit and striking out a pair.

The Spartans tallied their first run of the game in the top of the first in the form of a solo home run by Kennedy Jones. The Bulldogs retaliated in the bottom half of the inning when Anderson plated Davis with a sac fly to left field. Davis, who reached base via a one-out walk, advanced to third on a double to left center from Klein.

UNCG slugged three more solo shots to account for its run tally on the day, with a Daniel Cerda round-tripper in the second giving them the lead once again. Caleb Cozart and Rowan Watt each launched a solo home run in the fourth.

Before the Spartans took the lead for good in the fourth, Klein's seventh home run of the 2023 campaign tied the score at two-all.

The Bulldogs left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings and had a ninth-inning rally cut short after a caught stealing attempt at third base, followed by a flyout to center and a game-ending fielder's choice.

The Bulldogs and Spartans will play the rubber match of their series on Saturday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
