Bulldogs Rock Jayhawks in Series Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team picked up a 3-2 win in its series opener over the Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday Afternoon.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 28-21 overall while the Jayhawks fall to 22-27.

Josh Rodriguez led the Bulldogs at the plate with a pair of hits and a run driven in while clubbing his sixth homer of the season. John Anderson also went yard, blasting the eventual game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Andrew Bennett accounted for a double in the contest while Jayden Davis and Stephen Klein also added a hit. Davis's base knock extended his program-record hitting streak to 32 games.

Starting pitcher Jacob Cravey gave up zero earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. Cravey's strikeout total from the day moved him into third place in program history with 204 for his career.

Jake Holifield (2-2) gave up just one run over the seventh and eighth innings while striking out a pair to earn the win. Ben Petschke (10) slammed the door shut for his SoCon-leading 10th save of the season.

Rodriguez's solo blast in the bottom of the third held until the top of the fourth, when a two-out RBI single by Mike Koszewski evened the score at one.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, when a dropped third strike allowed a hustling Kace Garner to cross home plate from third on the ensuing throw to first. Dreier, who was replaced by Garner on the bases following a leadoff walk, was brought around to third on Bennett's double to right field.

Kansas tied the game in the top of the eighth on a solo home run by Chase Jans, but the Bulldogs answered in the bottom half with Anderson's SoCon-leading 18th big fly of the season that gave them a 3-2 lead.

The Jayhawks worked a leadoff single in the top of the ninth and brought the tying run around to third on a single up the middle by Sam Hunt. Petshcke thwarted the Jayhawk rally by striking out the next hitter and inducing a foul out to first base the close out the contest.

The Bulldog pitching staff conceded just one walk on the day while striking out 10 and stranding nine Kansas base runners.

The Bulldogs and Jayhawks will play game two of their series on Friday, May 12 at 4:00 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
