Davis Breaks Hitting Streak Record in Baseball’s 6-5 Win against Western Carolina

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman infielder Jayden Davis hit safely in his 30th-consecutive game to set a new Samford Baseball program record in the Bulldogs' 6-5 win over Southern Conference foe Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon.

The victory clinches a series win for the Bulldogs over the Catamounts and improves their record to 27-20 overall and 12-5 in SoCon play. Western Carolina drops to 17-28 overall and 5-11 in league action.

Davis's record-breaking hit came in the top of the first when he laced a 1-2 offering into right field for a single. The Cookeville, Tenn. native has batted .424 (50-118) over his 30-game hitting streak with 16 multi-hit efforts.

Andrew Bennett, Josh Rodriguez, and Lucas Steele all drove in two runs and went yard in the contest. Bennett notched a pair of hits, with Kaden Dreier and Davis also knocking multiple hits.

Jake Holifield (1-2) earned the win in relief, giving up just one run over two innings while striking out four. Ben Petschke (9) allowed just two hits over two scoreless innings to lock down his SoCon-leading ninth save.

Starter Brody Westbrooks labored over five innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out five in the no-decision.

Westbrooks worked the first three innings unscathed, stranding a total of five baserunners in the second and third innings combined. Aaron Walton helped keep the Catamounts off the scoreboard in the top of the second by making a full-extension diving catch with two outs and the bases loaded.

WCU eventually cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, using a two-run single by Brandon Butterworth and a two-run home run by Nate Stocum to take a 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half of the inning, with back-to-back solo shots by Steele and Bennett making it a 4-2 game. Josh Rodriguez tied the contest up with his fifth home run of the season.

Samford took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single from Bennett. Davis notched a one-out single before Bennet's RBI knock.

Western Carolina tied the game on an RBI single by James Hinson in the top of the seventh, but the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning on a Steele sac fly to center that fell just shy of the wall for a potential three-run homer. A Davis hit batsman, followed by a one-out double from John Anderson, set the stage for Steele.

The Bulldogs batted .344 (11-32) for the day while driving in three of its six runs with two outs. The Bulldog pitching staff made pitches when it mattered, stranding a total of 10 Catamount baserunners.

The Bulldogs will go for a series sweep over the Catamounts on Sunday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
