Bulldogs Fall in Series Finale against Western Carolina

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team dropped the third and final game of its weekend Southern Conference series against Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon 7-5.

With the loss, The Bulldogs fall to 27-21 on the season and 12-6 in SoCon action. The Catamounts improve to 18-28 overall and 6-11 in conference play.

Kaden Dreier led the Bulldogs on offense with a two-hit, three-RBI performance. The senior catcher slugged his seventh home run of the season on the day.

Jayden Davis also knocked a pair of hits, extending his program-record hitting streak to 31 games. Davis drove in a run with an RBI double in the fourth.

Garrett Staton slugged his ninth home run of the season while also scoring a run.

Will Lynch (3-4) took the loss on the day, surrendering seven runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings. Trey Sanders (3.1) and Turner Thompson (3) combined to toss the final six shutout frames, with Thompson punching out four and giving up no hits.

The Catamounts cracked the scoreboard in the top of the second on a one-out RBI double by Cole Jones and added six more runs to take control of the game in the top of the third. RBI base hits by Zach Ketterman and Brandon Butterworth, a three-run homer by Jordan Starkes, and a solo shot by James Hinson accounted for the damage done.

The Bulldogs fought back by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth, with a three-run shot by Dreier accounting for the big blow. Davis's two-out RBI double off the left-field wall cut Samford's deficit to 7-4.

A pair of two-out hits by Dreier and Stephen Klein brought the tying run to the plate in Josh Rodriguez, but his long fly ball to center field fell just shy of the warning track for out number three in the inning.

Staton led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot while Davis followed with a single to right to bring the tying run to the plate. The Bulldogs went down in order to cease their comeback effort.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, May 9 when they host Auburn University in a neutral-site contest played at the Hoover Met at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
