GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. JAX STATE (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will play host to Jacksonville State Thursday evening at 7 p.m., and then host Oklahoma Sunday at 1 p.m., both at Shauna Yelton Field.
 
Samford enters the week with a record of 0-1-1 so far this season. Samford opened the season with a pair of tough contests. The Bulldogs earned a 0-0 tie at Auburn last Thursday, and then dropped a 2-1 decision to DePaul Sunday afternoon.  Junior Whitaker Buchanan netted Samford's first goal of the 2023 season early in the DePaul game. The goal, which came in the sixth minute of the game, was assisted by graduate student Kyla Reynolds. Samford head coach Todd Yelton enters this game with a career record of 304-141-61 and he is Samford's all-time winningest coach with a mark of 264-109-58 with the Bulldogs. 
 
Jacksonville State enters Thursday night's game with a record of 2-0 on the young season. The Gamecocks have opened their season with wins over Alabama A&M (5-0) and South Carolina State (13-0). Camryn Davis currently leads Jacksonville State with five goals through the first two games of the season.  Laleh Lonteen and Naroa Domenech have each scored four goals each for the Gamecocks.
 
Samford and Jacksonville State will meet for the 20th time in soccer Thursday evening. Samford holds an all-time series lead of 13-5-1. The Bulldogs and Gamecocks last met on August 18, 2022, with Samford coming away with a 2-0 win in Jacksonville. Samford and Jacksonville State were co-members of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1997 to 2002 and the Ohio Valley Conference from 2003 to 2008.
 
Oklahoma, who hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff Thursday night, comes into the week with a 2-0 mark. The Sooners have earned a 6-0 win over Tulsa and a 4-2 win over Oral Roberts so far this season. Emma Hawkins has five goals and one assist for 11 total points to lead the Sooners so far this season. Samford and Oklahoma will meet for the first time ever in soccer.
