GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT TROY (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will play at in-state rival Troy Thursday night at 7 p.m. and will host Kennesaw State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
Sunday's game against KSU will be the annual Shauna's House game, raising money for orphans. T-shirts will be sold throughout the week and the team will wear commemorative jerseys in the game that will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to the Shauna's House initiative. The Bulldogs and Trojans will meet for the 11th time, with Samford holding a 9-1 series lead. Samford and Troy last met on Aug. 21, 2016, with the Bulldogs earning a 2-0 win at Shauna Yelton Field. The last time Samford played at Troy was on Sept. 14, 2004, also a 2-0 Samford victory.
Samford and Kennesaw State have met 11 previous times, with Samford owning a 6-5 series lead. The teams last met on Aug. 29, 2021, with the Owls earning a 2-1 win.
Samford enters the game with a record of 2-1-3 on the season. The Bulldogs tallied at 0-0 tie with fifth-ranked Alabama Sunday. Samford has been led offensively so far this season by
Nikki Bario and
Kyla Reynolds, each tallying two goals and one assist for five points. Freshman
Mia Wehby leads the team in assists with three so far this season, to go along with her one goal for a total of five points.
Goalkeeper
Zoe Clevely was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week, and, for the second-straight week, she was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week. Last week, she posted shutouts of two SEC schools, saving a combined seven shots against Ole Miss and No. 5 Alabama. Samford head coach
Todd Yelton enters this game with a career record of 306-141-63 and he is Samford's all-time winningest coach with a mark of 266-109-60 with the Bulldogs.
Troy enters Thursday night's contest with a mark of 5-1-0 so far this season. The Trojans have earned wins over Lipscomb (1-0), Kennesaw State (3-0), Queens (1-0), Alabama A&M (2-0) and Alabama State (4-1). The one loss for Troy came at Auburn by a score of 5-0. Troy has been led so far this season by Gabrielle Chartier with three goals and one assist for seven total points. Delaney Wells had two goals and one assist for a total of five points.
Kennesaw State, which takes on Georgia State Thursday night, enters the week with a record of 1-2-2. The Owls most recently battled Florida to a 1-1 tie last Sunday. KSU has been led by Aly Bryan, Agata Giani and Anabel Orozco with one goal each.
