GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. CHATTANOOGA (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford men's basketball team will return home to open SoCon play by hosting Chattanooga Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford and Chattanooga have met 110 previous times, with Chattanooga holding a 67-43 series lead. The teams met three times last season. Samford won both regular-season meetings, and Chattanooga won a meeting in the quarterfinals in the SoCon Tournament.
Samford enters Wednesday night's game with a mark of 11-2 on the season. The Bulldogs played at Texas Southern on Dec. 21, winning, 87-65. Samford has won its last 11-straight games, the longest win streak since the 1998-99 team won 13-straight games. The school record for longest win streak is 14 by the 1960-61 team.
So far this season, Samford has been led by junior
Achor Achor, averaging 14.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, leading the team in both categories. Junior
A.J. Staton-McCray is averaging 13.2 points per game, while senior
Jermaine Marshall is scoring 10.6 points per game.
Entering this week, Samford ranked in the top 10 in the nation in several categories. Samford ranks in the top 10 in bench points per game (4th-40.08 ppg.), assists per game (4th-20.7), fastbreak points per game (5th-17.85 pg.), scoring offense (6th-90.2 ppg.), steals per game (8th-10.7 pg.), three-point percentage (9th-40.1%) and turnovers forced per game (9th-17.69 pg.).
The Chattanooga Mocs enter Wednesday night's game with a record of 8-5 on the season. The Mocs last played at Auburn on Dec. 30, with Chattanooga falling to the Tigers by a score of 101-66.
Chattanooga has been led so far this season by Honor Huff, averaging 16.7 points per game. Trey Bonham is averaging 15.8 points per game, while Jan Zidek is scoring 12.6 points per game for the Mocs. Sam Alexis averages 11.8 points and a team-high 10.1 rebounds per game for Chattanooga. Tyler Millin scores 10.2 points per game for the Mocs.
