BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford sophomore catcher
Lucas Steele was named the No. 19 catcher in the nation by D1Baseball.com, the website announced recently.
As a freshman in 2023, Steele was third on the team with a .315 batting average. He was also second on the team in both home runs with 16 and in RBI with 51. During the season, Steele had 16 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games.
As a team, Samford posted a record of 37-25 last season, winning the Southern Conference regular-season title with a 15-6 mark in league play. The team also won the SoCon Tournament, marking the first time in program history that Samford has won both the league regular-season and tournament championships in the same season. The Bulldogs were selected for the NCAA Auburn Regional, defeating Southern Mississippi in the opening game of the regional.
Samford opens the 2024 by playing host to Queens on Feb. 16. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
