BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team opened preseason practice for the 2026 season with a workout Monday morning at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
"It was a great day," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Weather-wise, it was a little better than we thought it was going to be, it was a bright, sunshine day. Really a lot of excitement for being out here. We came out with great energy today and now we kind of know where our starting point is. We went through a bunch of drills, a bunch of ground balls, a bunch of throws, defensive stuff, just a lot of swings inside as we are still finishing up the field project."
Samford returns seven position starters and one starting pitcher from the 2025 squad. David said the returning leadership of position players should benefit the team this season.
"That's certainly exciting," David said. "We had one of the better offenses in the league last year and we return those guys.
Trey Higgins, who is coming off an injury from last year, by far, looked the best that he has. It's a veteran lineup both in terms of offense and defense. We have a lot of new guys on the mound, and we feel good about those guys, but our strength is the depth of that position group."
The Bulldogs will open the 2026 season by hosting Belmont in a three-game series at Joe Lee Griffin Field, playing Feb. 13 at 4 p.m., Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. To purchase tickets, go to the following link:
