Baseball Wins Slugfest At Purdue, 11-10

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Samford baseball team earned an 11-10 win in the final game of a four-game series at Purdue Sunday afternoon at Alexander Field.
 
With Samford's win Sunday, the series ends tied at two games each. Samford now has a record of 12-7 on the young season. Purdue's record moved to 15-6.
 
Samford was led in the game by Lucas Steele, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Garrett Staton went 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI. Hayden Perry went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Garrett Howe and Josh Rodriguez drove in two runs each for the Bulldogs. Jake Holifield (3-1) earned the win on the mound for Samford, pitching 3.1 innings in relief, giving up four runs on four hits.
 
Staton led the game off with a home run to right field for an early 1-0 Samford lead. The Bulldogs added two runs in the second inning when Perry singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Andrew Bennett and Steele to push the lead to 3-0. Purdue came back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at 3-3.
 
Samford took the lead again with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Josh Rodriguez tripled to left-center field to drive in John Anderson and Howe for a 5-3 Samford lead. After Purdue took a 6-5 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Samford tied the score again when Perry singled up the middle to drive in Jackson Harris in the top of the sixth inning to knot the score at 6-6.
 
The Bulldogs took control of the game with five runs in the top of the seventh inning for an 11-6 lead. Steel hit a two-run home run, while Howe drove in two runs and Perry drove in one run. Purdue plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Samford was able to hold on for the 11-10 win.
 
Samford will next play at in-state rival Jacksonville State on Tuesday, March 19. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Jacksonville, Ala.
