BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Bellarmine, winning the games by scores of 16-0 in seven innings and 14-3, also in seven innings, Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the wins, Samford now has a record of 6-4. Bellarmine's record dropped to 1-8 with the losses.

"Any time you can play a doubleheader and only have to use the number of arms we used (4), it's big," Samford head coach Tony David said. "(Michael) Ross and (Brooks) Rice really set the tone for the games. Both of those guys were great. We caught the ball all day and had a lot of good approaches at the plate." Â

In game one, Samford was led by
Cullen Horowicz, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
Garrett Staton,
Garrett Howe and
Angelo Prieto all homered in the game one win for Samford.
Michael Ross (2-0) pitched 6.0 strong innings, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out four batters without allowing a walk to earn the win on the mound for Samford.

The Bulldogs scored in each of the six innings they batted. Samford plated four runs in the first inning, one in the second inning, one in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and seven in the sixth to come away with the 16-0 win.

In game two for Samford,
Andrew Bennett went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Prieto went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while
Garrett Staton went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Brooks Rice (2-1) tossed 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out nine batters to pick up the win on the mound for Samford.

The Bulldogs plated a run in the first inning and two in the second inning to take an early 3-1 lead. Samford broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth. Bellarmine plated a run each in the sixth and seventh innings to make the final score 14-3.

Samford and Bellarmine will wrap up their series with another doubleheader on Sunday. The first pitch for game one of the twin bill is set for 1 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
