BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team won its sixth game in a row in a 9-6 victory in the second game of a three-game series with ETSU Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford earns the series win over ETSU. The Bulldogs are now 24-10 overall and 8-0 in Southern Conference play. ETSU fell to 20-12 overall and 5-6 in league play.
"They (ETSU) can really swing the bats, we knew coming into this that this was going to be a weekend where somebody was going to have to outscore the other guy," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We fell down early, it was 3-1, and Brooks (Rice) has been really good for us, he just didn't have it today. (Alex) Flood came into a really pressure-packed situation that really could have gotten away from us, but he made a big pitch to get out of it. He threw up some zeros and then we answered right back and scored the one run and then got two, one and four to kind of extend things."
Garrett Staton went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
Hayden Perry went 4-for-5 with an RBI, while John Anderosn went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Jackson Harris went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Garrett Howe had one hit to extend his streak of reaching base to 35-straight games, dating back to last season's final game.
Alex Flood (2-0) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Carson Lore pitched the final hitless inning to pick up his third save of the season.
For ETSU, Noah Gent went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI. Cameron Sisneros also homered for the Bucs, going 2-for-5 with one RBI for ETSU. Andrew Ronne (4-3) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bucs.
Samford jumped on top first when Staton led the bottom of the first inning off with a home run for a 1-0 Samford lead. ETSU scored two runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs plated a run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. In the third inning,
Hayden Perry singled to drive in Anderson. In the fourth inning, Staton hit a two-run home run to left field to give Samford the lead for good.
Samford added a run in the fifth inning and then plated four more in the sixth inning to take a 9-3 lead. The run in the fifth inning came when
Aaron Walton singled to drive in Anderson. In the sixth inning, Anderson drove in two runs, and Walton and Harris drove in one run each for a six-run Samford lead.
