Baseball Cruises To 12-1, Seven-Inning Win Over Liberty

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team wrapped up its series with Liberty with an impressive 12-1, seven-inning win over the Flames Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the win, Samford wins the series over Liberty, two games to one. Samford improved its season record to 28-15. Liberty dropped to 18-25 with the loss.

"This was a solid win all the way around," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We really pitched it, hit it and defended it. We made a few really great plays on the defensive side. We gave up the one spot early with a little bit of bad luck, but then we got it right back."

Liberty jumped on top first when Dye singled to drive in Kane Kepley for a 1-0 Flames lead in the top of the first inning. Samford took the lead for good at 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Anderson.

Samford broke the game open with five runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning. Walton scored the first run in the second inning on a ground out by Joseph Salvo. Howe then singled down the left-field line to drive in Josh Rodriguez and Harris to make the score 5-1. Garrett Staton then scored on a wild pitch and Howe scored on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Steele for a 7-1 Samford advantage.

In the third inning, Bennett hit a solo home run, Salvo doubled to drive in Harris, and Salvo and Rodriguez later scored on an error for an 11-1 Bulldog advantage. In the fourth inning, Bennett hit his second homer of the game to make the final score 12-1.
