Baseball Pounds Out 15-2 Win At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford baseball team plated 15 runs on 14 hits in taking a 15-2 win over The Citadel in game two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The win, coupled with Friday's victory, secures the series win for Samford. The victory improves Samford's season record to 20-10 overall and 5-0 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel fell to 15-14 overall and 0-8 in league play.

"This was just an all-around great game for our guys in all phases," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Brooks (Rice) set the tone on the mound early with a lot of strikes. Heath Clevenger came into the game in a tough spot, but he got a big double play grounder. I felt like we put on a clinic defensively with a lot of high-level plays."

Samford was led in the win by John Anderson, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI. Garrett Gowe went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Garrett Staton, Lucas Steele and Aaron Walton drove two runs each, while Hayden Perry and Jackson Harris had one RBI apiece.

"We have a lot of confidence as a group at the plate, that we will eventually get to the guy on the mound" David said. "This was a big day for Lucas Steele. We needed to get him going and he took a great BP session into the game. John Anderson and Garrett Howe were great again at the plate."

Brooks Rice (4-3) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Heath Clevenger, Blake Bortak and Noah Berry also saw time on the mound for Samford in the win.

For The Citadel, Tyler Christmas drove in the team's two lone runs. Landon Slemp (2-3) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up six runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for The Citadel.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Samford plated three runs. Anderson doubled down the left-field line to drive in Howe for the first run of the game. Steele then doubled to right-center field to drive in Andrew Bennett and Anderson for a 3-0 Samford lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Anderson hit a three-run home run to left field with Howe and Harris on base for a 6-0 Samford advantage. In the top of the sixth inning, Walton and Harris drove in a run each to push Samford's lead to 8-0.

After The Citadel plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Perry doubled to drive in a run and later scored on an error in the top of the seventh to make the score 10-2. In the top of the eighth inning, Howe hit a solo home run to right field to push Samford's lead to 11-2.

Samford added four more runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 15-2. Staton drove in two runs in the inning, while Walton and Howe drove in a run each in the inning for Samford.
