BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford University's athletics teams posted an impressive 986 in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) report, released by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon.
Samford had five sports, men's cross-country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's golf and women's tennis, to earn Public Recognition Awards, which go to teams earning multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads on their respective sport. Samford's teams in each of those sports posted perfect scores of 1,000.
Nine of Samford's 15 teams scored at least a 990 in the report. Samford led or tied for the lead in the Southern Conference in men's cross-country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's golf and women's tennis. The Bulldogs led all state of Alabama schools in the same sports, with the addition of baseball.
Additionally, Samford's baseball, football, men's cross-country, men's golf, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, soccer, women's tennis, women's track and volleyball teams all scored above the national average in their respective sports.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
