Samford Football Finishes Second Week Of Camp With Scrimmage

Birmingham, Ala. – To polish off the first full week of preseason camp, the Samford football team held the squad's first scrimmage at the Samford University Intramural fields on Friday morning.
 
The scrimmage lasted nearly two hours and was the first time this camp that the Bulldogs practiced in full pads.
 
"We did a couple good things on both sides of the ball," head coach Chris Hatcher said. "Defensively, I thought tackled extremely well and offensively, I thought we dropped some balls at receiver. We were paying some guys to see what they can do and I don't know if we performed as well as we possibly could out there. I thought offensively, we ran the ball well, but we had a hard time getting into tempo because our defense has been playing really good."
 
As expected, Quincy Crittendon and Nik Scalzo took the majority of the snaps at quarterback for the Bulldogs on Friday. The position battle will continue to be tightly contested heading into the third week of camp following an inconsistent performance in the scrimmage.
 
"We made a couple of good plays and then we missed a couple of easy throws out there that would have kept some drives alive," Hatcher said. "Gotta give the defense credit, they made some good plays over there but we have to be more consistent at that position."
 
After the scrimmage, the winningest coach in program history went out of his way to praise the defensive effort on Friday.
 
"I thought that we were really physical on defense," Hatcher said. "As the scrimmage went on, I thought some of those skill guys on offense really settled in."
 
Samford opens the season on the road at West Georgia (Aug. 31) and at Florida (Sept. 7) before welcoming Alabama State to town on Saturday, Sept. 14 for the Home Opener.
