BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University volleyball team will travel to Evansville, Ind., to compete in the Dunn Hospitality Tournament this weekend.
Samford will take on Miami of Ohio Friday at 1 p.m., Evansville Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Chicago State Saturday at 11 a.m.
Samford enters this weekend with a record of 2-0 following wins over Mississippi State (3-2) and Alcorn State (3-0) at home last weekend.
In the win over Mississippi State,
Kaleigh Meritt had 19 kills and 22 digs.
Ally Cordes tallied 16 kills and 16 digs, while
Gracie Lynn Butler finished with 14 kills and 13 digs and
Greer Golden had 10 kills and six digs.
Lexi Thatcher finished the match with 59 assists. The win over Mississippi State marked the first win for Samford over an SEC opponent since a 2011 win over Alabama.
For Samford in the win over Alcorn State, Butler led the team with seven kills.
Brianna Hamilton and Golden added six kills each for the Bulldogs. Thatcher led the team in assists with 32 and in digs with eight.
Samford and Miami of Ohio have played just once previously, with Samford earning a 3-0 win in 2023. Samford and Evansville have met twice before, in 2001 and 2023, with Evansville winning both meetings. Samford and Chicago State met in 1993 and 1998, with Samford winning both meetings.
Miami of Ohio has a record of 3-0 with wins over Lamar (3-0), Gardner-Webb (3-0) and Norfolk State (3-1). Evansville has a mark of 1-2 with a win over Puerto Rico (3-1) and losses to Akron (3-0) and Providence (3-0). Chicago State enters the tournament at 0-2 with losses to Bowling Green (3-0) and Cincinnati (3-0).
