Bulldogs Square off With Spartans for First Place in the SoCon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford men's basketball program returns to action tomorrow night as they host North Carolina-Greensboro at 5 p.m. inside the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs enter the game with a 13-3 record on the season and are 3-0 in Southern Conference play while the Spartans are 10-6 overall and hold the same record in league play as the Bulldogs.

The Samford Bulldogs are playing their second game in three days and are coming off an 81-68 victory over VMI on Thursday night. The Dogs sit atop the Southern Conference with a 3-0 record alongside the UNCG Spartans who are also unbeaten in the league. The Bulldogs have been on a roll at home, winning 27 straight home games at the Pete Hanna Center which is tied for the third-longest streak in the nation.

Trey Fort has been a constant scorer for the Dogs on the season, as he has scored in double digits in eight straight games. Jaden Brownell has found his offensive game again, scoring over 20 points in each of the last two games. The pair lead the Dogs in scoring each scoring 15 points per game. 

The Bulldogs knocked down 11 three-pointers in their win over VMI and are third in the nation in makes from behind the arc with 12 threes a game. Samford is fourth in the nation in offense, scoring 88.3 points per game. Defensively, Samford is forcing 18.1 turnovers per game which is second-best in the country.

Collin Holloway is coming off a 12 points and 12 rebound double-double which was his second of the season. He is just one point away from reaching the 1,000 career point mark. Samford shares the ball as well as any team in the nation, averaging 18.6 assists per game which is 9th in the nation.

The Spartans have won four straight games including a 78-75 buzzer-beating victory over Chattanooga in their last contest. UNCG has dropped their last six games against the Bulldogs. Head coach Mike Jones is in his fourth season as the head coach of a Spartans side that was picked to finish sixth in the SoCon Preseason Poll and Donovan Atwell was named a Preseason All-Conference player. UNCG is led offensively by Kenyon Giles who scores 17.2 points per game and the Spartans have three players who average double-figures.
